The Royal Gorge's Movie Fame

The Royal Gorge has been featured in numerous Hollywood films since the 1940s, including "Canon City" (1948) about a real prison break, and scenes from "True Grit" and other classic westerns. In 1955, portions of "Big House, U.S.A." starring Broderick Crawford and Charles Bronson were filmed at the bridge and in Cañon City. The dramatic canyon continues to attract filmmakers seeking spectacular Colorado scenery.

First Oil West of the Mississippi

Florence, Colorado was the site of the first commercial oil discovery west of the Mississippi River in 1862. Alexander Cassaday drilled for petroleum just 6 miles north of Cañon City, establishing Colorado's first oil company. The Florence Oil Field remained in operation for over 100 years until the 1960s, making it one of the longest continuously operating oil fields in American history.
