Old Max Prison and its history

The Colorado State Penitentiary, nicknamed “Old Max,” operated in Cañon City from 1871 until 2012. It housed some of Colorado’s most notorious inmates, and its stories live on through the Museum of Colorado Prisons across the street.

The Beaver Creek Settlement

Before becoming Penrose, the area was known as Beaver Creek settlement with a stagecoach stop established in the 1860s. It later became Glendale, featuring the Glendale Inn Stage Coach Stop that served travelers on the route between Pueblo and the mountain mining camps. The original 1868 schoolhouse operated until 1912, educating pioneer children in this frontier community.
